Scarce をDearth で言い換えたら、Dearthは強すぎる。なんて言われました。英単語は英英辞典で基本引きますが、こういう差異はやっぱり分かりづらいですね。
Q: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Food shortage will be eliminated in the future?
Today, we all are facing a serious problem, food shortage. Although I’d like to think that problem will be solved or today’s situation will be alleviated but I think it would be virtually impossible. I’ll make my argument from the following perspectives: the rapid increase of world population, climate changes, and the availability of the state-of-the-art technology.
First of all, the world population is growing rapidly on a level which we’ve never experienced before. In 20ll, the population in the world has finally reached to 7 billion. According to some papers reported by United Nations, the pace of growing population continues to be quicker. Even now, some developing countries cannot feed their own population enough, resulting from the rapid population growth and marking up the food price. I don’t think these countries won’t solve food shortage. Apparently, that harsh situation is not arisen from just only a lack of food. It is more complicated. The economic growth associated with globalization in countries such as China and India is likely to affect poor developing countries adversely. As countries develop, they begin to import more food in order to feed their population, leading to the increase of food price. Poor countries will find that the costs of foodstuffs are impossibly high. Furthermore, in developing countries, the capacity of infrastructures cannot meet the needs to deal with importing food, meaning a lack of food availability in the country. To solve this, governments have to tackle the mitigation of poverty, population growth, and the increase of food price at the same time. Can you think it is possible to governments?
Second, climate change is a big issue for all of us. Due to climate change, many lands which have been fertile sources of food are likely to experience floods, droughts or other types of extreme weather, making farms barren wastes. I always watch news about extreme weather and climate change here and there. Typhoons and cyclones are, for instance, becoming bigger and stronger compared to in the past, which will wash farms away easily in a moment. I know there are people trying to stop global warming, which is allegedly one of causes of extreme weather, and they have been disseminating their thoughts and ideas in an attempt to attract more world attention to global warming, making many people got momentum to reduce energy consumption or take action against global warming. This effect is, however, limited seen from all over the world. So I guess global warming will be exacerbated in the future.
Finally, now governments and companies are struggling to procure food stably. Thanks to the advancement of technology, they seem to be becoming able to produce food in the past barren areas such as desert. This is one of the most epoch-making invention because it can turn desert caused by deforestation into arable land. I hope such technology will save many lives in the future, and it will also, of course, improve food shortage but it couldn’t eliminate food shortage. Cutting edge technology is, in general, expensive to use for years. It takes time that new technology becomes widely available and affordable. Population growth will not, however, stop in the future. I think new technology cannot meet the food demand.
I’m not saying that it is impossible to improve food shortage. With new technology or efforts, the problem will be definitely ameliorated but it won’t mean eliminated.
